GM Joel’s Chess Week Recap - Episode 41
Opening: A20, B07, C88, D45:
Player(s): Tarjan, Kosteniuk, Motylev, Levin, tomashevsky, Wang, Radeva
Magnus Carlsen is back! After 400+ days without winning a classical tournament, the World Champion won the Isle of Man Masters convincingly, with 7.5 points out of 9 rounds. In the last round, he secured the overall win by drawing in 18 moves the runner-up, Hikaru Nakamura. And if Magnus winning an event is not really big news, an American veteran GM shook the tournament hall, by beating none less that Vladimir Kramnik and, in the last round, Alexandra Kosteniuk. The former-world-champions killa is James Tarjan, a 65-year-old former librarian who got back to the games only recently. Kudos to GM Tarjan! GM Benjamin shows us the game James won with Kosteniuk. Meanwhile, in Russia, the Rapid and Blitz Championship has seen the participation of some of the strongest Russian GMs, making it a thrilling event. In the Rapid section, Alexander Motylev triumphed, ahead of the strong Evgeny Tomashevsky. GM Joel shows us a couple of key games from the event. At the Youth Championships Girls U16, Annie Wang won with an impressive 10.5/11, bringing a gold medal to the US. Her relatively low rating is a bit deceiving, as the young player totaled much higher rated opponents. GM Joel shows us a game played by Annie, in which she gets an advantage by using good strategy, to then go on and win by using powerful tactics.
