The Candidates tournament has dominated the chess scene for the last few weeks, but the traditional open tournament in Reykjavik always gets my attention. The tournament attracts a number of top grandmasters, but because it is relatively easy and inexpensive to travel to, lots of American players go there, too. This week we will feature a battle between the strong veteran grandmaster Sergei Movsesian and the American prodigy Awonder Liang. Liang is the youngest ever international master from the U.S. He's just about to turn thirteen, and obviously has a bright future. In the present, opponents will often try to steer the game into strategical channels to take advantage of his lack of experience. That's what Movsesian did; but as we so often see, tactics eventually entered the picture, creating a scramble at the end.
